The word malachite comes from the Greek word malachos, meaning “soft,” because the stone is easily carved, or from malache, meaning “mallow plant,” due to its leaf-green color
Egyptians mined malachite in the Sinai Peninsula and near the Isthmus of Suez. They ground it into a powder for eye makeup (kohl) and wall paintings. Queen Cleopatra famously used malachite kohl, which also helped protect her eyes from the desert sun. Spiritually, they associated it with new life, fertility, and the afterlife (referring to paradise as the “Field of Malachite”)
